Who are we? Where did we come from? Why are we here? What is the hope for the future?
These are all questions that our worldview answers in some form or another. If you believe that over billions of years, a blob of goo mutated and eventually became you, life has no higher purpose, your identity is just a mass of organic cells, and it is over when you breathe your last breath, there is not much hope in your approach to mental health. Your self-worth is your ego connected to your identity. It fluctuates as your identity and feelings do. When you feel like you are worth existing, you attempt to improve the conditions around your existence. When you identify as worthless, you cease to try to add worth to your life or those around you.
But if you believe that you have an omniscient Creator as the direct source for your and all life, he has a purpose for you and you are accountable to him. The divine origin for your life gives it infinite value, and being a unique creation from God gives you worth. His purpose for your life is your reason for existence. Then your eternal destiny is directly connected to the decisions you make in this life.
You may wonder why your life is so messed up if an omniscient, powerful God has designed and planned your life. It is because sin has marred this world and everything in it. God knew about this and allowed you to witness some of the effects of sin, death, and destruction so you would know the horrors of sin and the consequences for your sinful acts. But God’s plan for you also includes an eternity fully restored and free from any effects of sin you have ever been exposed to. For more information see The Good Samaritan and the Gospel .
